The Buddleja genus was named after English clergyman and botanist Adam Buddle (1662-1715). The species name, davidii, honors French missionary and naturalist Pere Armand David (1826-1900) who discovered it in western China. It was introduced to the UK in 1896 and has been a popular garden plant ever since.

Buddleias are also commonly known as summer lilacs, butterfly bushes, or orange eyes, referring to the colour of their flowers. The Buddleia Butterfly Bush is also a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is related to other Buddleja species such as B. globosa (Oranges and Lemons), B. madagascariensis (Pink Butterfly Bush) and B. weyeriana (White Butterfly Bush).

They’re fast-growing deciduous shrubs that typically range from 6 to 12 feet tall, but some varieties can get as big as 15 feet. This shrub gets its common name from its attractiveness to butterflies, which are attracted to the flowers for their nectar. It has an upright, arching habit and produces long, cone-shaped clusters of fragrant flowers from July to September. These flowers can be pink, purple, blue or white, depending on the variety.
